Can England do it ? Easy.....
Tony Blair's Britain will come to a standstill this afternoon as England take on Portugal in the last eight of the World Cup.
Even inner-city muggers and car thieves, sink estate drug dealers and enthusiastic crack whores will take 90 minutes away from their daily routines to watch this game.
Sven-Goran Eriksson's men seem to be progressing through the tournament despite rather than because of the hapless Swede and who knows what formation and personnel will be on show this afternoon.
Portugal, I'm glad to report, are weakened by the absence of suspended Deco and Costinho while Ronaldo is struggling with a thigh injury.
So can England do it?
Of course they can and Bet Direct's 12/5 for England half-time and full-time is tempting enough for me.

Draw best option for Germany and Argentina
Two of the World Cup heavyweights Germany and Argentina do battle in the last eight and for many England fans asked which team they want to win, it will be a question of which country they hate the least! But there can be no better fun than watching your two enemies damage each other. The host side have steadily built up a (blonde and blue-eyed?) head of steam and will be difficult to beat in front of their own fans. However, the South Americans have turned in some enthralling performances in this year's tournament without resorting to scoring with their hands - yet. With the games getting tighter, we reckon Bet Direct's 7/4 for the draw in 90 minutes is worth a punt. Take Italy to shrug off the investigations of corruption in their domestic game - after all they are used to it - and beat Ukraine in the second quarter-final of the day for a nice double to start off the weekend.

Stakes get higher in World Cup
England have won through to the World Cup quarter-finals where they will play Portugal and now Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men can sit back and see who will join them in the last eight.
Picking the winners of the Italy v Australia and Switzerland v Ukraine matches seems easy enough.
World heavyweights Italy take on the rookies from Oz but we think the Azzurri will find this game tough.
With stakes getting higher there will be a tightening up in play and although we take Italy to win, we prefer to take draw half-time/Italy full-time.
We shall double our bet up in the second game where Switzerland take on Ukraine and we think the Eastern Europeans, who have recovered after a thrashing by Spain, are a good enough to edge a narrow victory at 8/5.

Stalemate for England
England expects when Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side take on Ecuador in the last 16 of the World Cup in Germany.
Despite being unconvincing in their three groups games and now with a threadbare strike force after the departure of the injured Michael Owen, the English are firm favourites to get past the South Americans.
We expect them to go through but it may take extra-time and even penalties so we will have a few quid on Bet Direct’s 5/1 for the game to be drawn at half-time and full-time.

Klose for first goal
Saturday sees the beginning of the knockout stages of the World Cup and we are looking to win a few quid with a tasty double.
Host nation Germany, beginning to impress even their own fickle fans, take on never-say-die Sweden.
There’s no real value in a simple German win over 90 minutes but taking on-form striker Miroslav Klose as the first goalscorer is worth a punt with Bet Direct at 4/1.
The other game of the day sees the talented Argentines take on Mexico and we have no hesitation in tipping them to be winning at half-time and full-time, Bet Direct offering 10/11.

Double for last stage of Group matches
Friday sees the last of the World Cup group games before the knock-out stages begin.
Groups H sees Ukraine facing Tunisia looking for the win to go through and we reckon they will blow the Africans away.
After a thrashing at the hands of Spain in their opening encounter, the Easter Europeans got the campaign back on track - and cancelled out a hefty goal deficit - by beating Saudi Arabia 4-0 in their next outing.
Take Bet Direct’s 7/5 for Ukraine to be winning at half-time and full-time and double it up with South Korea at 11/4 to beat Switzerland in Group G.

Italy to scrape through
This most entertaining of World Cups nears the knockout stages and Group E is finely balanced going into the last round of matches.
The Czech Republic’s game against Italy sees both sides needing victory to guarantee passage through to the last 16.
Both teams have blown hot and cold in their two games so far in Germany but we expect Italy to scrape through as they often do and will take Bet Direct’s even money for the win.

Under-fire Owen to score first
England take on Sweden in their third World Cup group game and it’s a contest that will be less tense than had been anticipated before the tournament started.
Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men have won their opening two games - albeit unconvincingly - and have already qualified for the knockout stages.
Given the uncertainty of how England will approach the game - and who could be in their starting line-up - it’s perhaps best to leave results alone.
But we know under-fire Michael Owen will be determined to get his critics off his back and will take Bet Direct’s offer of 11/2 for the Newcastle striker to get the first goal of the game and his first of the competition.

Spain to dominate
Despite two impressive displays by Argentina there are those who think it could be Spain’s time to win the World Cup.
The Spaniards turned in arguably the best performance of the opening games with a 4-0 demolition of much-fancied Ukraine.
The Spanish squad is bursting with talent and even the talismanic Raul could not get into the starting line up for the game against the highly-rated Eastern Europeans.
We think Bet Direct’s 5/6 for Spain to be winning at half-time and full-time against Tunisia is decent odds so lump on - we certainly will!

We're in form - so a Sunday double !
We pundits don’t like to blow our own trumpet but we are on something of a roll at the moment in the World Cup.
England striker Peter Crouch was tipped to score the first goal against Trinidad and Tobago and we followed that up the next day with Argentina to be winning at half-time and full-time - doubled up with a Holland win. So keep with us!
Brazil, led by a lacklustre Ronaldo, stuttered into this year’s competition with a narrow 1-0 win over Croatia but they should find Australia an easier prospect in their second match.
The Socceroos have plenty of experience in their side but the gap in class will be evident even though the aforementioned Ronaldo may start on the bench.
Bet Direct will give you 5/6 for a Brazil victory with the South Americans starting a goal down and if you’re feeling lucky - and we are - then double it up with Croatia to beat Japan at 4/6.

Favourites in action
Friday sees two of the World Cup favourites in action and if nothing else, 90 minutes of entertainment should be guaranteed.
Argentina and Holland both impressed in winning their opening games and look good bets to follow those performances up with wins against Serbia & Montenegro and the Ivory Coast respectively.
A straight double is a little bit tight on value so take Argentina to win at
15/8 with Bet Direct when they start a goal down and double it up with a Holland victory at 4/5.

Crouch to score first against Trinidad
England need only to beat Trinidad and Tobago in their second group game and they will have qualified through to the last 16 of the World Cup.
Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men came in for some unjust criticism after their narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay in last Saturday’s opener.
The rest of the opening games so far have shown that not all points can be won through free-flowing football.
The Trinidadians punched above their weight to draw with Sweden in their first game but they have probably used up their luck already.
We think England will be comfortable winners but for a bit of value we will take Bet Direct’s 4/1 for Peter Crouch to score the first goal.

Wednesday World Cup double
Football’s perennial underachievers, Spain, start their World Cup campaign off playing against Ukraine in what could be one of the best fixtures of the group stages.
Although they were unbeaten in qualifying, the Spaniards drew five of their 10 group games and had to rely on a play-off (they beat Slovakia 6-2 on aggregate) to reach the finals.
But as always, a lot is expected from the talented Spaniards who can boast some of the best players in the world in what is arguably the best domestic league in the world.
However, they will come up against one of the dark horses in this year’s competition and could be held.
Bet Direct’s 21/10 for the draw looks good and if you double it up with Germany to beat Poland at 1-2 later in the day you should be quids in.

Czech's to dominate
The World Cup is up and running and one of our favourite dark horses, the Czech Republic, have the opportunity to get off to a good start against the USA. The Czechs are well organised and have strength in depth and although the Americans, guided by Bruce Arena, are neat and tidy, the don’t have the cutting edge at this level. We will take Bet Direct’s 11/5 for the Czech Republic to be winning at half-time and full-time.

Going for first treble
Day Three in the World Cup house gives us a chance to take advantage of an attractive looking accumulator. There is no doubt that the group stages is only for separating the wheat from the chaff and so we will go for our first treble of the tournament. Bet Direct offers you 4/5 on Holland to beat Serbia, 8/15 for Mexico to beat Iran, and 2/5 for Portugal to beat Angola. Have it!

Crouch to score at any time
The one we’ve all been waiting for; England’s first match of the World Cup against Paraguay. All the talk of Wayne Rooney’s injury has to be pushed into the background for once as the other players attempt to overcome the first hurdle in the way to hopefully winning the tournament for the first time in 40 years. We think the unfancied South Americans will have little to frighten Sven’s lads but with the odds for a straight England win so tight, we will have a few quid on Bet Direct’s 11/8 for man-of-the-moment Peter Crouch to score at any time.

Germany 2-0 our first World Cup bet
At last, the World Cup kicks-off and the German extravaganza will have to go some if it is to live up to the hype of recent weeks. The host nation Germany take on Costa Rica in the opener and although on paper it should be comfortable enough for the home side, a few facts need to be borne in mind. Belgium’s goal in 1982 was the first goal in an opening game since 1962 and since then only once has a team won by anything other than 1-0. But we think this will be the second time and will take Bet Direct’s 5/1 for Germany to win 2-0 and hopefully get this tournament off to a fruitful start for us punters.

Draw at Easter Road
Easter Road in Edinburgh is the rather curious venue for South Korea versus Ghana but the locals should enjoy an intriguing contrast in styles. Dick Advocaat’s side reached the semi-finals in 2002 on their home turf but are unlikely to reach those heights again in Germany. The Africans, who beat Jamaica 4-1 in their last outing, will be no pushovers but the Koreans will provide plenty of energy and attitude. Bet Direct’s 11/5 for the draw looks good and we will double that up with Holland at 4/9 to take care of Australia at home.

Cole to score first in final England warm-up
Saturday offers England their last opportunity to finalise their starting eleven before their World Cup opener against Paraguay when they take on Jamaica at Old Trafford. Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men beat Hungary 3-1 during the week in Manchester but the performance left everyone with more questions than answers. The Three Lions should be close to full strength which will give enigmatic Joe Cole the license to push forward. The Chelsea midfielder has the ability to unlock any defence and Bet Direct will give you 6/1 for the first goal. We have a hunch that they will have to pay out on this one.
