Sweden to dominate against Chile

England fans will get the chance to see their World Cup opponents Sweden when they take on Chile in their last warm-up match before Germany.

And Lars Lagerback, the only coach in Sweden's footballing history to lead the national team to four consecutive tournament finals, will be confident when he comes up against fellow countryman Sven-Goran Eriksson later this month.

England haven't beat the Scandinavians since 1968 and their strike partnership of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrik Larsson have proved to be match-winners over their careers.

And there should be no problem beating Chile so we’ll take Bet Direct’s 7/5 for the home side to be winning at half-time and full-time.

Italy France double

The World Cup warm-ups continue apace ahead of this year’s competition in Germany which begins next week.

Italy are putting the final touches to their preparations with an away game at Switzerland whereas France, on the face of it, have a slightly easier match against Denmark at home.

Friendly matches are notoriously difficult to gauge but we think the Italians will edge their game while the French will not want to get beat in front of their own supporters.

Take Bet Direct’s 6/5 for an Italy win and double it up with 8/15 for a France victory and that should give you a nice Wednesday double.

Mariners for Sunday win

The last of this season's Play-off finals sees the battle between Cheltenham Town and Grimsby at the Millennium Stadium.

Town can thank their lucky stars for even being in Cardiff. A draw secured a

2-1 aggregate victory over Wycombe but they were forced to withstand a siege on their goal.

Grimsby finished one place above their opponents in the league and a flying start to the campaign included a 3-0 victory at Whaddon Road while they also won April's return encounter 1-0.

We reckon that psychological lift will be enough to help take Grimsby up and will take Bet Direct’s 11/8 for a Mariners’ victory.

Swansea the play off kings

The Play-off finals have already served up some surprising results and so who knows what will happen in the League One finale at the Millennium Stadium between Swansea and Barnsley.

The Yorkshire men booked their showdown in Cardiff after turning around their semi-final, second-leg tie with Huddersfield in dramatic fashion and must fancy their chances of taking another step towards the top flight last visited by them in 1997.

The Welsh side, however, will have a massive backing in the city of their great rivals and it must be noted that they have won one and drawn one against the Tykes this season.

Bet Direct are offering 11/8 - decent enough odds for a Swansea win.

Watford to jump back to Premiership

The Championship play-off final from the Millennium Stadium throws up what would have been an unlikely pairing at the beginning of the season - Watford v Leeds United.

A place in the Premiership is at stake and it is difficult to split the pair who have performed heroically to get to Cardiff in the first place.

Watford booked their ticket to the final with a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace at Vicarage Road having held a remarkable 3-0 advantage after the first match.

United overcame Preston against the odds and stand on the brink of a return to their natural habitat, the top flight of English football.

Bet Direct can’t separate these sides offering 8/5 for both teams to win but we will edge towards Watford to nudge their way back to the Premiership.

Halifax / Hereford draw

Saturday brings the Nationwide Conference play-off final between Halifax and Hereford at Leicester.

Hereford, who beat Morecambe in the semis, finished higher in the league and have a superior defensive record than the Shaymen and might just be the favourites in some people’s eyes.

However, we feel it could be difficult to part these two evenly-matched sides over 90 minutes.

Bet Direct are offering 2/1 for the draw which we will take and let the extra-time and penalties take care of themselves.

Arsenal to triumph at the Stade de France

A Champions League final for the purists will take place when Barcelona take on Arsenal at the Stade de France.

There is the mouth watering prospect of two of the world’s finest players leading their team onto club football’s biggest stage.

La Liga’s champions for the second year in succession will be led by FIFA footballer of the year Ronaldinho, while the Arsenal side, who have never won the tournament before, are inspired by the all-conquering Thierry Henry.

Both sides are unbeaten in the tournament but Arsenal arrived in France on the back of an impressive European record this season of 10 successive clean sheets and 919 minutes without conceding a goal.

That is one reason we think the Gunners will edge it. The other reason is destiny, a rather more abstract concept.

Bet Direct will give a massive 3/1 for the English side to bring the trophy back to Blighty for the second year in a row. Don’t miss out.

Home win for Brentford

The League One play-off semi-final second leg between Brentford and Swansea promises to be another lively event coming just days after the first meeting.

The Welsh side travel to London miffed at being unable to record more than a1-1 draw at home in the first leg.

Honours ended even at the Liberty Stadium, with Swansea's Sam Ricketts grabbing a late equaliser after Jay Tabb had given the Bees an early lead.

We think Martin Allan’s men will finish the tie off in front of their own fans and will take Bet Direct’s 11/10 for the home win.

Classic FA Cup on cards

The purists are looking for a classic FA Cup final when West Ham take on Liverpool at the Millennium Stadium, the last time the showpiece occasion will take place in Wales before returning to Wembley - hopefully!.

The Hammers are looking for their first triumph in the tournament since 1980 but are underdogs against the stronger and more consistent Scousers.

However, the Londoners were a division below the Gunners when Trevor Brooking’s goal ensured a knees-up down the east end.

It is a cliché but we feel sometimes a club’s name is on the cup so we will gladly take Bet Direct’s 5/1 for the Hammers to win, great odds for a two-horse race.

Swansea for first leg advantage

The first leg of the Coca-Cola League One play-offs sees Swansea take on Brentford in a Wales v England clash.

Martin Allen's team also reached the play-offs last season and although they were well beaten by Sheffield Wednesday that experience may prove invaluable.

Swansea, however, anticipate a 20,000 sell-out clash and their partisan fans could make the difference.

A winner-takes-all Millennium Stadium meeting with either Huddersfield or Barnsley on May 27 awaits the victors but we think the Welsh will grab a first-leg advantage.

Take Bet Direct’s 11/8 for the home win.

Home win at Deepdale

Preston North End look to be firmly in the driving seat of their Championship play-off semi-final after a 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.

David Nugent's brilliant individual strike put the battling visitors ahead but former Preston winger Eddie Lewis struck a superb free-kick to rescue the Yorkshire side from defeat The return game at Deepdale now promises to be a fraught affair but Billy Davies' men should just take have the edge.

Indeed, both managers now feel the Lilywhites are the favourites to progress to the final against probably Watford who beat Crystal Palace 3-0 in the first leg of the other semi-final.

Bet Direct are offering even money for the home win which we think is a tempting and likely way to double your money.

Arsenal to leave Highbury in style

Highbury hosts its last game ever when Arsenal take on Wigan Athletic.

The Gunners will move just along the road to their new stadium next season and are hoping to take the Champions League trophy with them.

The Londoners will take on Barcelona in Paris on May 17 but before then the Lancashire side need to be looked after.

It is unthinkable that Arsenal will leave their hallowed stadium with a defeat but getting decent odds on a win is not easy.

We fancy a correct score on this occasion and will have a punt on Bet Direct's 6/1 for Arsene Wenger's men to triumph 3-0.

Draw for the Eagles

The Championship play-offs continue with Crystal Palace taking on Watford in their first leg at Selhurst Park.

The lunchtime kick-off will see the Eagles hope to grab a good advantage to take to Vicarage Road for the second leg on Tuesday.

Palace are the marginal favourites with most bookmakers and they of course have the experience of getting promoted via the play-offs to the Premiership just two years ago But Watford are no mugs and could well get a draw which is on offer at 21/10 with Bet Direct.

Football News on Thursday, May 04, 2006

Preston North End for Friday night win

It’s that time of the season again when the dreaded but dramatic play-offs bring guaranteed excitement, despair and glory in equal measures.

Friday night pairs two of England’s most famous clubs in Leeds United and Preston North End who do battle at Elland Road.

Who can take a first-leg lead into the second game? Preston boss Billy Davies is confident of seeing off a Leeds side that have won only one of their last 10 matches and have failed to score in five of their last nine.

So we reckon it will be the Lancashire side who come out on top and will have some of Bet Direct’s 9/4 for the away win

Trotters to bag three points

The Premiership draws ever closer to its conclusion as Bolton take on the north east's European success story Middlesbrough.

The Teesiders have the UEFA Cup final to look forward to next week and so their team line-up will make for interesting viewing.

And with the Boro players’ minds probably elsewhere, then we think the Trotters should have enough to take the three points in front of their own fans.

Which is why we will take Bet Direct's 6/5 for the home side to be winning at half-time and full-time.
